Duo phono stage
No expense was spared in the design and construction of the Phono Blocks. The Phono Blocks are at the pinnacle of phono preamp performance. It just doesn’t get any better.
The 20/20 was designed to get the most performance possible at its predetermined price point. To get there, extra was spent to get premium parts and circuitry into the signal path. Consequently, some expenses were squeezed out of less important areas. Those trade-offs have worked very well. The 20/20 has delivered an extremely high level of performance at a reasonable price. It is an incredible performance value.
What if all the price constraints in the 20/20 were lifted? The price goes up, the performance goes up. It starts looking a lot like the Phono Blocks.
The actual signal path of the 20/20 is quite good. It uses a circuit very similar to the Phono Blocks. In critical positions, it also uses the same premium quality (and high cost) components. Very little was held back in that area.
The opportunity for upgrade is focused on a more refined power supply, improved circuit board properties and dual chassis construction.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
It performs beautifully and brings pleasure to music lovers all over the world. The design has proven to be rock solid with long term stability and reliability.
Even after 10 years of production, there was very little that could be done to ‘improve’ the 20/20.
Also, over those many years, there have been just a few things that caused some customer questions. Since it has been the same short list of concerns, it was worth taking a look at. Might be a chance for improvement.
Insight
There comes a tipping point of accumulated knowledge that insists upon a new product. Insight gained from the design of preceding phono preamps opened up a new possibility.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
The TZ VIBE design has combined elements from two of our well established and highly regarded products. The KC VIBE provides the foundation and second gain stage. The little LOCO Mk2 provides the transimpedance (TZ) input gain stage. It is an incredible opportunity to try the Sutherland transimpedance experience at a more accessible price.

The TZ DIRECT advances our phono preamp range. It combines our most refined transimpedance input stage with a second gain stage derived from our legacy line stages. Each of those stages contributes to the musicality. Working together, the music effortlessly flows into your system.

You may have noticed a new kind of phono preamp design on the market—usually referred to as ‘current input’. Until recently, this approach has been very much in the background. But, listeners and reviewers are now giving it some serious consideration. And many love what they hear.
The Sutherland little LOCO is my realization of this approach. From the first moments of listening, the musicality is stunning—spacious, effortless & full.
